The Mask

Nobody chooses who they hide among, and nobody chooses when the choosing happens. A hall's open epoch closes at the first UTC midnight at which it holds sixteen masks. The drand round published sixty seconds later shuffles it, and every run of sixteen positions is a cohort.

What a mask cannot do, stated plainly
- You hide among owners, not masks. A speaker is one of their cohort's 16, fewer owners if one owner holds several. Someone who wears a fraction f of an epoch's masks shrinks everyone else's crowd to about 1 + 15 (1 - f), and locks a deposit and a stamp in every mask to do it.
- "Not me" can be proven. A member who has not spoken can prove it off chain, and anyone can pay them to. Style, timing and "it was me" claims can name an author the chain cannot.
- No forward anonymity. BN254 gives about 100 bits of security. A leaked key or seed (your wallet's signature of the key message) names every speech it ever made.
- After the shuffle, a mask only speaks or waits. Its deposit can never be withdrawn once it is in a cohort. Losing the key then loses the deposit.
- The shuffle trusts drand. It trusts the League of Entropy's threshold not to collude. The Beacon contract checks every round's signature on chain.
- A mask moves almost no money. It cannot tip, gift, pay a door, win the Front Page, or name a recipient. Its MASQ burns when it speaks, or returns to its wearer in public. Its stamp repays whoever lands its speech for the gas, at no more than base fee + 0.1 gwei and one stamp, and calldata is credited at 16 gas a byte, so that refund can exceed the real cost by up to about 13,000 gas. That is the most a mask can hand anyone.
